Both CTV News and CBC radio have been reporting on summer learning programs provided by Simcoe County District School Board, where students are improving their math skills by building robots — and learning literacy from a pirate!
The CTV News video notes that once the summer program is completed, kids are more prepared for the upcoming school year. Teacher Amy Hsiao says students find summer learning a fun place to improve math and language skills as they learn through games and hands-on activities. Program coordinator James Dobson, who is also Vice-Principal of Willow Landing Elementary School, explains how happy parents are with the progress their kids are making.
There are 126 grades 2 and 3 students from 15 different schools enrolled in the three week program, says the report.
James Dobson also spoke with CBC radio’s Ontario Morning host Wei Chen about SCDSB’s summer learning program. You can listen to the podcast here (the segment with Mr. Dobson begins at 13:54).
