Making Plans: SMCDSB’s Summer Learning Program

Part of a series of articles highlighting the creative themes and experiential learning/student engagement strategies boards are employing for their 2021 Summer Learning Programs and the Grade 7 & 8 Mathematics component. All content is provided by the individual boards. To contribute to this series, contact us here.

In a series of Tweets shared by Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board, we’re taken through the various stages and components of the board’s 2021 Virtual Summer Learning Program. Highlights include:

  • First Nation, Métis and Inuit voices and land-based knowledge in the curriculum with resources focused on math and literacy content;
  • Opportunities for summer learning students and their families that are new to Canada;
  • Activities that build student participation, engagement and motivation especially in the areas of literacy and numeracy; and
  • Discussions about emotions and how to manage them during stressful times.

According to the board, “SMCDSB’s SLP staff was a group of educators able to build community and relationships in a virtual setting in a short period of time. This team worked collaboratively in order to ensure the success and well-being of the whole child.”

Our SLP is another great opportunity to incorporate First Nation, Métis and Inuit voices and land-based knowledge in the curriculum. With a focus on language and math, these further complement the SLP in a way that is essential for some- and good for all! @OntarioSLP @SMCDSB pic.twitter.com/PoZmuzCsb2
