Welcome to the summer learning Robotics forum, created by the Council of Ontario Directors of Education for the sharing of ideas, stories, and comments by teachers and board leads participating in the 2015 summer learning robotics project.
Join the discussion here. (Please note: this forum is only available to teachers and board leaders involved in the 2015 summer learning robotics project. Participants will be invited to join the discussion via email.)
This summer, 34 boards received STEM resources/robotics kits to use in their summer learning programs (SLP) on a voluntary basis. Introducing the kits in summer learning classrooms is intended to offer students and teachers an opportunity to experiment with these resources in a flexible, small group setting.
This year’s SLP also provides a valuable opportunity for the CODE robotics team and LNS to hear from summer learning leads and teachers about how robotics can support student learning. There is strong evidence that the use of robotics encourages and supports the development of literacy and numeracy skills, problem solving, collaboration, and critical thinking skills.
The initial response from boards has been exciting, with many teachers and board leads describing how the robotics kits are engaging students in creative ways while helping build literacy and numeracy skills. We can also see that students are developing collaborative, entrepreneurial and problem-solving skills.
We welcome your thoughts and ideas on how robotics can stimulate and enrich student learning. Our aim with this forum is to further discussion around this important initiative by asking boards to share their experiences, offer comments, and post success stories relating to the use of robotics in their summer programs.
Your contributions will be very helpful to further understanding the connections between robotics/STEM resources and numeracy/literacy learning.
